Angry Letter Draft

Dear Senator Inouye,

I am a good student and I try my best to keep up my work for all my classes. I do my work and really try while I am playing sports for my school. I feel that the furlough days are taking education away from all students and taking away money from the teachers, especially the ones that really need it. Teachers don't really get paid that much and they deserve to not get money taken away from them; they do a really good job teaching us students and helping us learn to the best of our ability.

I have had bad experiences with the furlough days, especially in my classes. Being in high school, we need to keep up with all of our classes in order to graduate and maybe even get scholarships for college. I have been having a hard time in my classes, especially math because I am in the tenth grade and in Algebra 2. We don't get to see each class everyday and the furlough days take away class time. Less time in class means that we have more things to go over in a certain amount of time. Every class has to cram the lessons together so that we learn what we need to learn by the end of the quarter. Because we have 6 classes, I already had a hard time before the furloughs because of having a lot of homework and multiple projects at once. There is just little time with so many things to learn. In my math class, we have to learn multiple lessons in one day, and I do stress over that because my brain needs time to process one lesson at a time and being able to learn how to solve each problem and knowing what formula to use, it takes a while for me to memorize everything. I don't always understand how to do everything, and it is very difficult because I don't always have time to get help from my teachers and I can't go to after school tutoring because I have to go to practice. What makes it worse is that lately I have been very sick, too sick to attend school. I can't keep up with everything because while I am at home trying to get better, at school there are other things that I need to learn and study so that I can pass my final exam.

I do have many problems with the furlough days and I am pretty sure that a lot of other students are going through the same problem as me, or maybe even worse. Having to deal with this and going through so many fustrations doesn't help our daily lives and furloughs don't make it any better. Parents also don't like furloughs because they have to work and now they have to worry about where they are going to take their children so that they know that their children are safe as they go about it and go to their daily jobs.

Furloughs should be taken away and put the school days back to normal so that all us students, parents, and teachers. Teachers should get their pay back and the government should maybe take away jobs that they think are useless or maybe take money from other saving bonds that are not being used as much. Education is important and teachers are helping the students get their education. Taking away one day of the week is taking away an extra day of education.

Thank you for understanding and maybe there can be things to be done to take away the furlough days.

Sincerely,
Jisel K. Liboy

Journal #16: Risky Business Draft; Hazing

Topic: Prevention of Hazing

Thesis: Hazing creates risks of harm to students; therefore, it should be prevented.

Draft:

Hazing is a realistic test and a task involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way to intiatiating a person into a gang, club, sports team, or even just to hang out with a group of friends. Students/teens use hazing for "group bonding" and to embarass the new members. Hazing creates harm and it should be prevented. Students shouldn't be able to do that anymore because of the outcomes.

Others may think that hazing can be a good thing because it's like and intiation and team bonding for teens, for sports, and other group activities. Students haze because they want to get to know everyone and bond with them and build a bigger relationship between friends. They haze by doing activities to get to know each other. If students haze responsibly, hazing can be safe. Being able to bond with each other or build bigger relationships shouldn't be taken away from the children.

Hazing shouldn't be allowed because students use and abuse hazing to harm, humiliate, and embarass other students that just want to join the group, sport, or activities. Students use others that want to join the group. If they are being humiliated and embarassed, they wouldn't feel part of the group, they would just feel used and abused. They get harmed and hurt physically and emotionally. Hazing is divisive and dangerous, it should be prevented and banned. Most of the time students are being used because others with haze and hurt them, but most of the time, they wouldn't become part of the group. Hazing is a very serious and dangerous issue and it should be prevented before others get really hurt.

Not only does hazing hurt the students that are being abused, but it hurts future generations because it has a bad influence on them. Hazing should be prevented because it is setting a bad example for the youngens; teaching them that it is okay to criticize, humiliate, embarass, abuse, and harm other students. It's also teaching them that hazing is fun and that they should do it because the older kids are doing it. It brings to the topic of peer pressure. They are being pressured and so are the victims, they are being pressured to do things that humiliate all to just join a group. Because there is hazing, movies are being made with hazing in it, and that is also pressuring everyone and setting a bad examples.

No one deserves to go through pain that they shouldn't have to go through, but some have suffered from it and it caused them pain. If hazing was prevented a long time ago, it wouldn't have hurt a lot more people. Till this day, students are hazing, not only students, but adults. They are all setting bad examples, but also the media. Hazing is very harmful and embarassing and no one should have to suffer from it. Therefore, hazing can and should be prevented, it causes harm to all kinds of students and it should be taken away.

Journal #10: College Essay Draft

As I was growing up, I've been through a lot as a child. On the news, I always hear about how young children go through all of these problems and don't have anyone to care for them and take care of them. Thinking to myself, "If I were put in the situation to take care of a child that is in need, or any child at any matter, I will do my best to take that child into my care.
There are a lot of things that a child needs while they are growing up, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. No matter how long the child would be in my care, I will teach them everything that I know. Being with a child builds love, care, and support for them; that's what every child needs to have a good life and to start them off.
I would teach this child different and new values, good ones. I would teach them to be honest, caring, and responsible. They would have respect for everyone, especially the elderly. The most important thing in their lives would be their family and friends, but first, they would know to take care of themselves and make sure that they would be alright. They would learn the values eabout life and how life came to be (well, the different theories).
They would be able to experience a parent figure that would treat them good and have a good life. I wouldn't spoil them, but be able to teach them what I know, and teach them to be better than me and use the knowledge that they have to learn and teach themselves more. I would like them to experience different sports, different foods, clubs, activities. So that when they are not with me anymore, I would want them to have experienced a lot of different things. I would just want to them to experience a good life and know what it is all about.
I do believe that all the children deserve to live a good life and to know a lot of knowledge that would help them in the future. If I could have a child in my hands all the time, they would be a better person than what I grew up to be.

Journal #8: Colleges

The colleges I would go to are:

  • University of Pheonix
  • Academy of Art University
  • University of Columbia

The reason why I chose these colleges are because I have three choices of what I would like to be when I grow up. My first option is to join the air force in the communications occupation. But in case I don't join, then I could still do communications at the University of Pheonix. My second job option is to become a graphic designer because I like to work on the photoshop projects during school and I think it's fun, and it might be an enjoyable job for me. I was also thinking about becoming a teacher, so I thought of University of Columbia because I wanted to live in New York and I think it would be good for me. I have also thought that maybe I might want to go to college in Europe for the experience, but I think it was just a suggestion to myself, but I won't really do that..

Journal #9

Ophilia Speaks is a "coming of age" novel because in each section, it has all the stories of adolescent girls going through a lot of stuff as they become older. There are things like pregnancy, death in the family, eating diorders, ect... The book is good for teenagers to read because it explains what other teenagers are going through in their teenage life and how they deal with it.

Coming of Age essay, final

Big Island Trip

“Ready class, for our first outer island trip?”
Our first outer island trip, going to the Big Island with all of the 4th graders at my elementary school. My teacher wasn’t the only excited one.

I was 10 years old, going on a trip without my parents going with me. Not only did I experience going on a trip without any of my family members, but I experienced working toward it to go on the trip. The day I found out about my trip, made me a very excited, young, little girl, who wanted to go so badly.
I ran home after school that day, rushed into the house, yelling, "Mommy, mommy! We are taking a field trip to Big Island, can I go, PLEASE?" My mom had a smile on her face; and then I gave her the permission slip, her face didn't really look too happy anymore."Jisel, the price is really high and I don't think that you should go on this trip; it's too expensive."I took the paper back from my mother and walked away with a sad look on my face. The next day, I went to school, and I told my teacher, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Fujii, my mom said that the trip is too expensive, so I can't go." I looked at her with a sad frown on my face. She told me, "You know what, Jisel? You are a very bright girl and I think that you deserve to go on this trip. I'll tell you what, if you help me every day after school to move these things from the classroom, I will pay you 5 dollars a week." I turned around and smiled at her, "Thank you so much! I appreciate it." From then on, for two weeks, I would stay after school and help move the things in the classroom; it was being renovated.
Finally, the day had come. The day that I had to wake up three in the morning to catch a bus to the airport. I was so excited, to go on my trip and to hang out with my friends for 3 days. We arrived at the airport in Kona. We had groups, so we had to stay with our group the whole trip. The first thing we did was go straight to the hotel to put our bags down. The hotel that we stayed at was the Kamehameha hotel. We explored the hotel a bit and looked at the pictures of the Kings and Queens of Hawaii.

As we left the hotel, we went to different places and we explored Kona. We went to different beaches, the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nuts Visitor Center, Onizuka Space Center, King’s Trail, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Keahou Bay, Kilauea Volcano, Hulihe’e Palace, the coast of Kailua, Kona, Lapakahi State Historical Park, and many more places. We were on the tour bus travelling to different places and being taught all about these places.
All day, we were just learning all that we can and taking notes because the trip was a part of our grade. We also walked trails, went on lava rocks and took a lot of pictures for remembrance of this trip. After a long day looking around Kona, we went back to the hotel to get a good night’s rest. The best part was spending the night at the hotel. Even though we had to go to sleep at a certain time, we made our time worthwhile, playing around and just making the night fun. But because our day was so long, we had to get a lot of rest because the next day was going to be another long day."Wake up, kids. Get ready, today is going to be a long day," said my group leader. We got up and got ready, packed up our bags and left for the tour bus. Not only did we finish sighting Kona, but we went to Hilo and started there also, on that day. We visited places and learned about King Kamehameha and all the Hawaiian history. But not only did we visit the places that were about Hawaii’s history, but we also went to the Hilo mall, Parker Ranch, and Akaka Falls.

Another long day came passing us by as we explored more of Waimea and Hilo. We went to parker ranch and walked around, looked at the animals, and then ate lunch. That day seemed longer than the day before that because the drive from Kona to Hilo is about 2 hours long. We went to Akaka Falls and Kahuna falls, to just see what it is like. We also visited few other places and then went to the Hilo hotel.

We walked into the hotel and went to our rooms. "I'm tired," I said as we dragged ourselves into the hotel in Hilo. Another day went by as we continued to study about Big Island and the histories. And soon came the day we had to leave.
“Wow, the trip went by so fast,” I said. And my friend Jazmin replied, “Yeah, well, it’s time to go home, I had fun though.”
“Me, too.”

On the last day, we finished up our booklets for school, packed up our things and went to the airport to catch our flights back to school. As we came back to our school, my mom had come and picked me up, even though we only lived right across the street. I seen my mom and I ran up to her. We turned around and started back home.
My mom looked at me and said, “How was your trip? I missed you.”
“It was good, and I missed you, too, Mommy.”

This trip showed that I was coming of age because I brought on responsibilities of taking care of myself without my mom and making sure to be safe. I also had to listen and pay attention so I don't get lost. I learned that you should work hard toward your goals. And just for me to go on the trip, I worked hard toward getting the money and being able to go.
Even though 4th grade might have been a little too young, I still felt like I was growing up because of the responsibilities that I have taken up before, during, and after my first trip without any of my family members.

Coming Of Age Essay

A time that I felt was me "coming of age" was when I went on my Big Island trip in the fourth grade and we stayed there for 3 days and 2 nights. The reason why we went was because we were supposed to learn more about the Hawaiian culture and the Kings and Queens of Hawaii.

I was 10 years old, going on a trip without my parents going with me. Not only did I experience going on a trip without any family members, but I experienced working toward it to go on the trip. The day I found out about my trip, made me a very excited, young, little girl, who wanted to go so badly.

"Jisel, the price is really high and I don't think that you should go on this trip; it's too expensive."

I took the paper back from my mother and walked away with a sad look on my face.

The next day, I went to school, and I told my teacher, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Fujii, my mom said that the trip is too expensive, so I can't go." I looked at her with a sad frown on my face. I'll tell you what, if you help me everyday after school to move these things from the classroom, I will pay you 5 dollars a week." I turned around and smiled at her, "Thank you so much! I appreciate it."

From then on, for two weeks, I would stay after school and help move the things in the classroom; it was being renovated. I had experienced hard work and cleaning. Working towards going on my trip was worth it.

This trip showed that I was coming of age because I brought on responsibilities of taking care of myself without my mom and making sure to be safe. I also had to listen and pay attention so I don't get lost. I also learned that you should work hard toward your goals. Just like I had helped my teacher to work toward being able to go on the trip.

writing experiences and goals

I have writing experiences from elementary school, until now. Throughout all my years of school, I have learned different writing techniques. One writing technique is to make a web or a thinking map of the topic and branch it out into details. Using the thinking map, you write your essay in 5 paragraphs; the introduction, 3 details, and then the conclusion. Writing also uses grammar and punctuation. Spelling is also important. The more you write, the better you get at it.
My goals for writing are to try and make it more understandable. I need to not make long sentences and just cut out what isnt needed. I want to be able to use better details to make images in the reader's head, accordingly, to what I wrote my story about and what happens in it.
